This memo is in response to the assigned research report for WRIT 220. I will focus on the increased cost of electricity within a household. The proposed solution is to use smart metering to promote efficient home energy management. A smart meter is an electronic device that records usage of electrical energy and communicates the data to the electricity distributors for monitoring and billing (Depuru et al., 2011).ENERGY COST AND CANADIAN HOUSEHOLDSWith interest in electric power continually expanding, vitality costs have been rising gradually since the end of the twentieth century.

Canadian vitality costs incorporated into the consumer price index (CPI) dramatically have increased over the two decades ranging between 1994 and 2013 (Green et al., 2016, para. 2). From 2010 to 2013, power costs have ascended by an increase of 1.31 per kWh, with some Canadian cities having an uprise of over 4 (Green et al., 2016, para. 2). On account of the expanded utility cost, the government of Ontario have taken action to integrate the smart metering device into their homes to enable consumers to adjust their habits in order to decrease electricity bills.

SMART METERING FOR ENERGY MANAGEMENTThe developing future of connected communities requests a smart interconnection of infrastructure, energy, technological innovation and human activities. A smart meter is an advanced energy meter that measures the consumption of electrical energy, giving extra data to consumers compared to a traditional energy meter (Benzi et al., 2011). Integration of smart meters into electrical energy grid includes implementation of a range of procedures and programming, contingent on the elements that the situation demands.Smart meters are necessary factors of the Smart Grid and enable two-path correspondence by interfacing remotely with the utility and smart meter readings consequently (Gerwen et al., 2006). By giving a point by point data about utilization patterns, smart meters enable consumers to make informed choices to change usage and lower power bills. Numerous benefits are credited to smart metering, including energy savings for residential customers, lower metering cost, greater quality of supply, schematic pricing to attract consumers (Gerwen et al., 2006). Smart metering benefits utilities by improving consumer loyalty with quicker communication, while giving consumers more control of their power utilization to save money and diminish carbon footprint. With power visibility all the way to the meter, utilities can optimize strength distribution and even take the motion to shift demand loads.SOURCES Green, K. P., Jackson, T., Herzog, L., & Palacios, M. (2016, March). Energy Costs and Canadian Households: How Much Are We Spending? Retrieved March 08, 2019, from This article gives overall data on how energy consumptions of Canadian families have changed as of late, and how they equate to overall spending. It gives numerous records and insights on the present utilization of smart metering. Specifically, it analyzes what number of Canadian families are encountering moderately high power costs, what number of are “energy poor and how power varies amongst household income. This source is useful in explaining how much Canadian households spend on energy and cost associated with that. This information will appear in the introduction and solution sections of the report. Van Gerwen, R., Jaarsma, S., & Wilhite, R. (2006). Smart metering. Leonardo-energy. org, 9.This article provides a general overview of what smart metering is and what the benefits are when transitioning from conventional gas meters. The article gives an overview of the numerous points of interest that are ascribed to smart metering, including decreased metering cost, power savings for residential consumers. It also discusses the future of smart metering depending primarily on the policy and influence of the government parties involved. This source will identify the advantages of smart meters and will provide information toward the start of how smart metering is being utilized. F. Benzi, N. Anglani, E. Bassi and L. Frosini, “Electricity Smart Meters Interfacing the Households,” in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, vol. 58, no. 10, pp. 4487-4494, Oct. 2011. Retrieved from: article provides background information on smart meters and its role in energy saving. It discusses the link between energy smart meters and households opts to offers various chances to communities for energy saving solutions. Additionally, it features the role smart connections can play in correlation with other types of smart devices, such as gas or water smart meters. It provides information on smart grid houses on creating a cooperative network for energy saving. Overall, this source will help me write the problem and solution sections, specifically to explain how smart meters work and what its benefits are.REQUEST FOR APPROVAL I intend to investigate the problems associated with increased energy cost in Canadian households and explain the advantages of using smart meters as opposed to conventional meters. Please let me know if this topic meets your approval. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact me through e-mail at [email protected] I would appreciate receiving feedback by March 24 so I can further continue researching and ensure the project is completed on time.
