Science Fiction

Science Fiction is a popular and interesting genre’s to read. It is a genre that helps childhood dreams of living in other worlds come to life, It is known as the literature of ideas because of the concept of imagination used in the stories e. g. time traveling, space travel, alien races, dystopias, utopias etc. It brings us to an imaginative world of the future helping us portray things we could never imagine of doing or seeing. It helps us picture the many consequences that creations of the future can bring us.

As Ray Bradbury quoted “I don’t try to describe the future. I try to prevent it” the quote shows that this author does not only write to create an image of the future, but he writes to show people what the outcomes of certain future inventions could bring, and to warn everyone of the possible chaos caused by future inventions.

The author is saying that just because all inventions or creation, it does not mean that they always have a positive effect, and could also have a negative effect.

This is shown to be true in stories such as Sand Kings where a man mistreats alien pets, which in the start seem harmless but slowly form into a huge danger. Another example is in the story “The sound of thunder” when the character made the slightest change in the past, it affected the future greatly causing a lot of changes. This shows the writers trying to show us that the creations could really affect our lifestyle or way of living, so they warn us by writing about it in science fiction stories.

The story of the Sand Kings is an example of authors trying to warn people about the possible out comes of the future. The plot of the story is how a man that collects exotic animals, stumbles across creatures called Sand kings. The Sand Kings are smart creatures, which can build, scavenge and fight. After a while the main character starts to get bored of the sand kings and decides to starve them. This turns out to be a bad decision as later on in the story the Sand Kings get out and start to grow.

The character’s mistreatment to the Sand Kings makes them violent, killing many people. This shows that the writer is trying to portray an image of a future where there are exotic pets for sale and how having strange creatures could cause many problems in the future. This story relates to the quote as in the quote the author is saying the stories are to prevent the future, in this case the sand kings are a type of pet you can buy in the future and the outcomes of mistreating them caused a large consequence and problems.

It helps us understand the consequences of animal cruelty and the consequences of the mistreatment. This story not only shows us of the consequences of the mistreatment of animals but also the consequences of a person personality. In the book the character’s bad personality also contributes to the final problem, he is portrayed as a stuck up, self centered guy, because of his personality it made him make the self centered decision of starving the sand kings for his own amusement of watching the sand kings starve.

This tells us that personality can also be a problem as different personalities could change what happens in the future Another example is shown in the Sawyer article in the quote by Isaac Asimov “Science fiction is the branch of literature that deals with the responses of human beings to changes in science and technology” (Sawyer, Paragraph 3) the quote explains that the genre of Science Fiction is literature that that describes the way people react or use the inventions in Science Fiction and explores the many outcomes which can be brought by the scientific inventions.

In the article it talks about how science fiction writers not only talk about imaginary effects but also scientific effects that could happen. Many science fiction writers are actual working scientists with degrees in science meaning many of the Sci-Fi writers put in real scientific effects and consequences judged on their knowledge of scientific theories. For example a year before the atomic bomb was built, a science fiction writer had already written about a nuclear fissure bomb and how the radiation could affect the human genes when exposed (Sawyer, Paragraph 6).

This shows that science fiction writers write about possible after effects and problems caused by creation to try to show us as about the possibilities and to try to avoid it. In the story the sound of thunder it shows a future where time travel is invented and people can go on safari’s into the past to go hunting. In this story the character goes back to the past to go on a hunt, he is warned about how the smallest changes in the past could affect the future greatly.

When confronted by a T-rex the main character trips and ends up crushing a butterfly. The main character continues thinking that everything will return to normal, as it was just a small butterfly. When the character arrives back in the present time he notices significant changes such as many words are spelt differently and the wrong president won the elections. In this story it shows that the smallest changes in the past may cause a huge change in the future.

The writer is trying to show that time travel is not a good thing as you have to be really careful about your environment as the smallest changes could effect the present time greatly. He is trying to warn us of the possible threats, which could happen with the creation of time travel, as it could be used as a negative invention to try to change certain events from happening in the future changing the course of history. This is yet another example of an author trying to prevent the future through science fiction stories.

In this story the writer not only warns us about time travel but also about inventions in general as he shows the possible outcomes from the inventions and it shows that inventions can be for the good of mankind but the decisions made by people with the inventions make a huge difference whether it is a good decision or a bad decision To conclude the quote “I don’t try to describe the future.

I try to prevent it” is relevant in many science fiction stories as many of the stories contain some sort of invention etc. that has not been invented, and some sort of plot twist, which causes a lot of problems in the story. This shows the authors trying to show us that the future does not always have to be perfect and that some invention or creation should be avoided as it could lead up to one of the scenarios in the stories. For example in Sand kings in the start the Sand Kings seemed harmless but towards the end of the story they turned out to be very dangerous.

In the sound of the thunder it shows how the smallest changes in the past can affect the course of the future greatly. The authors quote tries to show the negative effects of future technologies and he tries to warn people by showing all the negative problems, which happen in the future. Many of the writers try to put a mental picture in our heads to warn us to not build these inventions and not let our drive to build more and more inventions take over and one day create an invention or problem which we were warned about through sci-fi stories.
