“One of my fondest memories as a adult on browsing my local place was going by the river and relaxing idly on the bank. There I’d enjoy the peace and quiet, watch water dash downstream, and pay attention to the chirps of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees and shrubs bend under great pressure from the wind flow watching them go back gracefully with their vertical or original position following the wind had died down.

When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to jump back or return to its original position, the term that immediately comes to mind is ‘resilience’. “

Each individual must face some or other difficult situation at some point of his/her life. But, how do people package with such difficult occasions that change their lives? Many feel emotionally drained, mentally tired and they tend to experience a sense of uncertainty. Yet people generally adapt more than time alive changing situations and nerve-racking conditions. What enables them to take action? It entails resilience, a continuing process that requires time and effort and engages people in taking a amount of steps.

Resilient behavior is not restricted to individuals only. It really is applicable to teams and organizations as well. For example, an organization may receive a setback throughout doing its business. As we can see, resilience is one of most important characteristics a person or an organization or a business needs to have to make their journey smooth.

Conceptual Construction:

The word “resilience” is derived from the Latin verb “salire, ” which means to bounce. The prefix “re-” means “back” or “again. ” Thus, “resilience” generally is about jumping back again (as with jumping back to a prior point out) or jumping again (as with rebounding). It details recuperative power.

So, we define resilience as the ability of individuals or things to feel better quickly after taking place of something that is upsetting.

Application of the concept:

Resilience does apply to individuals, individuals, communities, organizations at some or other point of your time as each of them are destined to come across something unpleasant through the journey of their life.

In the framework of a business, there is a huge amount of discussion occurring about organizational resilience and the critical tactical advantage it offers to business in today’s world. Organizations that lack resilience are apt to be destined for failure. Those which may have it tend be workplaces where one can find high employee morale, effective teamwork, constant innovation, great output, and enviable success and success. Hence, the idea of workplace resilience changed very important for the organizations.

From the idea of view of an organization, resilience can be looked at as:

The ability to handle pressure well

The capacity to respond to change with confidence and flexibility

The capacity to bounce back from defeat and disaster

The ability to maintain good cheer despite the inconveniences and frustrations that are part of each day work life

Components of Resilience:

A combo of factors plays a part in resilience. Many reports show that the primary element in resilience is having caring and supportive associations within and outside the family. Relationships that induce love and trust, provide role models, and offer encouragement and reassurance help bolster a person’s resilience.

Several additional factors are associated with resilience, including:

The capacity to make reasonable plans and take steps to transport them out

A positive view of yourself and assurance in your strengths and abilities

Skills in communication and problem solving

The capacity to control strong feelings and impulses

The range of resilience can be defined at two levels.

Individual level

Group/Organizational level

It is important to understand that organizational resilience starts with, and depends upon, the personal resilience of every member in the business. The group’s overall resilience is the product of the non-public resilience of each of its individual users. When all users are highly resilient, the product of their individual levels of resilience is huge, and the ensuing group resilience is palpable. One cannot moderately expect to build a resilient organization together with people who summarily lack personal resilience.

Empirical Study:

The empirical analysis is conducted using the interview method. The interviewee 1 is chosen to depict the grade of specific resilience. Interview 2 can be an example of place of work resilience within an organization.

Interviewee I3 reference point came up while I was taking the interview of I2. He was cited for example for less capability to cope up with stress in an organization. I decided to take his interview to determine whether his resilience levels are in fact low and listen to his views on resilience.

The following questions are asked to 3 interviewees. Their answers are analysed and a generalization is arrived at.

What is the importance of resilience for you?

Give me one situation where you exhibited resilience?

What factors inspire you to demonstrate resilience?

How do you really mostly handle problems or concerns (Speaking with others, interacting with things by yourself etc. ?

If resilience can be quantified, do you think the resilience shown by others in the above mentioned situation would have been the same?

Do you feel that the quality of resilience in a person comes by beginning or is it influenced by the surroundings in which a person is brought up?

Do you think resilience can be developed or advanced in an specific?

What will be the factors that develop the grade of resilience in an individual?

What is the value of resilience of a person to an organization?

How will a poor event have an impact on your performance in job?

Do you think that resilient employee make up a resilient organization?

Interviewee 1(I1):

Age: 48

Profession: Business – Seller in development materials

I1 believes that resilience is the main one of the most important qualities an individual need to own to survive. He simply states a person cannot live his life without having this quality. I1 suffered a great tragedy at age 16. He lost his complete family (parents, two sisters and a sibling) in the floods and kept without one. But, he proved remarkable resilience at that early get older of 16. With the help of his uncle, he started working. He used to wait college in the night after his working hours. He completed his diploma in civil engineering and started a company after going for a loan. With his enormous stength & determination, he developed the business through the years which currently has a turnover of just one 1. 5 crore and employs around 20 people.

When enquired about the factors that motivated him to exhibit resilience, he says the he cannot tolerate being left behind in any situation. Failure functions as a determination for him to have success. He believes in dealing with his problems on his own. He thinks that each abilities change to a sizable extent and in the same way the capability to deal up will also vary from person to person. A person might show low resilience and another might show high resilience. There may be nothing like zero resilience. Also, he thinks that resilience would depend on factors, which some happen by beginning like intelligence plus some are dependant on the environment in which he is raised. When asked about the development of resilience in an individual, he’s of the thoughts and opinions that it could be done by a change in attitude of a person.

Interviewee 2 (I2):

Age: 26

Occupation: Job Engineer at L&T

I2 feels that resilience is one of the most crucial features a person should hold. He is convinced that one has to come across many failures in his/her life in case one is not resilient enough, he’ll remain back in the competition. He clarifies me a situation when he was relocated to a engineering site near panipat as part of his job. He found the conditions very hard as it was a site job and he was required to put 14-16 hours every day. He could not adjust himself to the new environment as he proved helpful in a standard office setup for days gone by 2 years. Furthermore, he cannot digest the fact that he must stay away from the luxuries of city life. He understood that his performance is slowly and gradually getting afflicted because of these factors. In these circumstances, his resilient frame of mind emerged to his save. He started to manage the new environment and acquired himself tweaked in two months.

When asked about his desire to exhibit resilience, he immediately highlights to his performance that received infected. He never wishes to remain as underperformer within an organization. However, he seems that not everyone can exhibit similar type of behavior. He cites example of his colleague who still left the company as he cannot handle the new environment. He is convinced that the capability to manage up varies across individuals.

Also, he believes that the resilient frame of mind in a person is developed because of the environment he was raised at. And he is convinced that the quality of resilience can be developed in a person. He cites a few factors like retaining relationships, improving self confidence in self, which help in developing resilience within an individual.

When enquired about the partnership between the individual’s resilience and organizational resilience, he opines that both are tightly related. Actually, he is convinced that the efficiency of business is also determined by the resilience of individuals. If one is not resilient enough, he cannot perform well during the problems period that will subsequently affect the organization’s performance. Absenteeism & Turnover costs will be less if the work place resilience levels are high. Also, he says an business can be called resilient only when its employees are resilient.

After this interview, I decided to take the interview of the person whose research was cited in the above interview as he left the organization struggling to manage up with the stress of life at engineering site. I chosen to learn his characteristics pertaining to resilience. He was also a colleague of mine after i worked at L&T

Interviewee 3 (I3):

Age 24:

Work experience: 24 months at L&T

Currently pursuing MBA

I3 also believes that resilience is very important to a person to handle the tensions life offers during one’s trip. When asked about any situation where I3 exhibited the quality of resilience, he narrated his attempts to get entrance at a B-school. He attempted for 3 years but was unsuccessful in getting entrance. He was stressed out and lost his self-confidence. However, his parents stood by him and urged him to try again. In the fourth yr, he finally been successful in getting entrance to college or university of his choice.

When asked about his resignation at L&T, he says that he didn’t give any goal to job. Also, he believes a person will display resilience in times only once he considers that the lead to that particular situation is important to him. As the work was not in his main concern list, he did not find any craving to deal up with the strain offered by the job. So he resigned.

Also, discussing work place resilience, he thinks that company suffers a great deal if the employees aren’t resilient enough. In today’s world there is absolutely no job without stress and employees have to learn working with it or else both the staff and the company suffer. He also is convinced that resilience can be developed in the labor force and organizations should target more upon this.

Based on my empirical study, I arrived at the next generalizations.

Almost all individuals consider resilience as you of the most important qualities a person needs to own.

People display resilience as they think it is hard to be left out in the race of life. Failing serves as a determination to allow them to achieve their goals.

People have a tendency to show resilience only in situations that they consider important to them. A predicament may make a difference for one however, not for the other (Former mate: office work)

Ability to deal up with situations will vary from person to person. Some exhibit low resilience although some exhibit high resilience.

The amount of resilience shown with a person will depend on both on internal factors like intellect and external factors like the environment in which he was raised.

A person can form resilience by methods such as maintaining better romantic relationships with family, expanding self confidence, recognizing circumstances that can’t be altered etc.

Employee resilience is the main element to organizational resilience.

Productivity of organizations raises if its employees are resilient and can deal up with stress at place of work. The expenses of absenteeism and turnover should come down. The greater resilient a workforce, the more they are designed for heavy workloads, stresses, and major change without becoming stressed out.

Implication on Group work:

Resilience can help in bettering the performance degree of an individual greatly. It can help him to bounce back from beat or disaster, perform under great pressure, be adaptable and adapt to changing circumstances and be cheerful despite the frustrations and hassles that are part of everyday work life.

Also, resilient individuals take the group performance levels to new heights.

The intellectual, emotional, and physical repercussions of stress immediately compromise the sources of competitive advantage in today’s marketplace. A lot more resilient a workforce, a lot more they can handle heavy workloads, pressures, and major change without becoming stressed out. Thus they improve the efficiency of the organization by the great level.

Contribution to OB:

The above analysis of mine reaffirms the value of resilience for an individual to handle the problems that life throws at him. There are some interesting finding both at the individual and the organizational level. The quantity of resilience shown by way of a person in times relates to the importance he accords to that situation. Also, it can vary from person to person. Also, the analysis find out that resilience can be developed in individuals.

From organizational perspective, the study discovers the value of work place resilience for a performance of organization. Absenteeism and turnover will reduce in such organizations. Output increase as people tend to perform successfully.

The quality of resilience boosts the grade of life of an person. People display resilience as they can not process being defeated. Inability works as a inspiration to allow them to achieve their goals. This capacity varies from person to person. You will see people who show less resilience and you will see ones who show high resilience. This will depend on interior factors like their cleverness, ability to make relationships and exterior factors like the surroundings in which these were raised, income of their parents etc.

Also, specific resilience plays a major part in the success of organization. An organization can be termed resilient only if its labor force is resilient. Resilient workforce can handle stress effectively which results in a much better performance of the organization.
